Joe Steinlauf, long-time independent Seiberling dealer in Chicago, knows the answers to tire selling from experience. For the past 35 years he’s been doing business from the same location in the Windy City.
Automobiles were the exception rather than the rule when Joe set up shop in 1919. So, his business was founded on the more popular bicycle. Today he does an outstanding business in tires, but he hasn’t forgotten bicycles, which gave him his first boost toward success. Joe’s Tire and Cycle Supply carries a full line of bikes and bike services.
Steinlauf’s reputation become nation-wide back in 1931 when Ripley’s popular “Believe It or Not” column carried the story of a Steinlauf customer who drove 87,500 miles on a single set of tires. Since then he has “made” the reply column 10 times for other unusual reasons. His son Fred, is associated with him in the business. At present, they’re looking for larger quarters to keep up with an expanding business. Steinlauf backs up his aggressive program of radio, newspaper and direct mail advertising with optimism, enthusiasm and initiative - and it’s been paying of for 35 years.
