Norman Palefski was a promising basketball player at Yeshiva University during the 1954-1955 season. As a freshman, he served as the team’s sixth man, averaging 6.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game, and led the team with a 69.7% free-throw shooting percentage.
Tragically, Palefski passed away in the summer following his freshman year. In his honor, Yeshiva University established the “Norman Palefski Memorial Trophy,” awarded to the team’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) of each game. The university also initiated annual fundraisers at the start of each basketball season to commemorate his memory.
Prior to his time at Yeshiva University, Palefski attended the Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy (MTA), where he made significant contributions to high school basketball. As a senior, he broke several Jewish High School League scoring records, including:
• Points per game (PPG): 26.5
• Points in a single game: 51
• Total points in one season: 530
His outstanding performance earned him the Jewish High School League MVP award, and he became the first Yeshiva League player to be named to the New York Post’s All-Prep team.
Palefski’s legacy continues to be remembered within the Yeshiva University community for his athletic talent and the impact he made during his brief time at the institution.
