Wedding of J Schulman and Hike Cohn Schulman. March 28, 1953 at the Twin Oaks

J had just joined AZA. AZA was for boys 14 -20 and J had just turned 14 and his parents let him join. He was being installed and needed a date for the installation.

The Feter (J’s grandfather, Yaakov Schulman) said to Ben (J’s father) take him over to Avraham Cohn’s because, “Abe hut maidlach” “He has daughters”.

Back then you didn’t call in advance. At best you had party lines. A Party lines was a phone line that was shared by multiple families. In this case they had a four party phone line. They were extremely common in the 1930’s and 1940’s in rural areas. (The basic advantage of using a party line was that since each connection had to run a number of miles in order to reach the remote homes, a larger number of homes had access to telephonic services utilizing lesser number of wires.) Around the times of World War II, party lines were the only way local residential subscribers could get a local telephone service). Any way the point is, it wasn’t uncommon for people to show up at your house unannounced. To see family you just showed up.

They came to look over the crop and I was the crop. When they arrived I was laying on the floor, wearing a pair of white summer shorts and a white halter top reading the funnies. They explained that he needed and date and I was the date. We were both 14 at the time.

We dated on and off again for 9 years after that. When he was 16 he wanted to put his AZA pin on me. If you got “pinned” that means you were going steady. I wasn’t ready to commit to a serious relationship at that point and said no. Then when I was 18 or 19, Fannie said, “What’s going to be with you a J?” “Oh, nothing” I said, “He’s just my best friend.”

When Fannie was pregnant with Marvin I went to Florida to help her and take care of Libby. At the time, I had 3 guys that were tailing me. When I was leaving (from Union Station) I scheduled to say goodby to the one of them on the top floor and one of them on the ground floor by the train. They both brought me boxes of candy as gifts.
